In 1961 when Bohler Steel Africa(Pty) Ltd was established, also welding electrodes and wires were sold. All products at this time came solely from Böhler in Austria. Throughout the 80’s a lot of pipeline electrodes were sold.
In November 1980 the sole agency for Fronius Welding machines in South Africa was signed.
The Welding business increased from 1995 after Thyssen Welding and Böhler Uddeholm Welding merged in 1995 (50%/50% joint venture). However, only from 2003, when Böhler Uddeholm bought out Thyssen Welding, the Company grew steadily and is now No. 4 in the world.
In South Africa we are now able to offer our own world renown brands such as Bohler, Thyssen, UTP, Soudokay and Fontargen, providing welding materials such as coated electrodes, solid wire and filler wire for electric arc welding, stick electrodes for gas welding, welding consumables for maintenance and repair and soldering materials.
